Research Highlights

Scope – Research Highlights can cover any topic that focuses on photonics science and technology.  They are general interest pieces and not read like a scientific or technical journal article. The link to photonics can be direct (about a photonic phenomenon, device, etc.) or indirect (technology that enables something used or made in the photonics field). It can also cover any stage of scientific development from theoretical/conceptual to commercialized. At present, the primary categorization of topics are:

  • Technology or science still in research phase and not ready for the commercial market
  • Commercialization highlights
  • Technology or science that has been commercialized or made into a product
  • Tutorials – Description/walkthrough of how photonics technology is used or made

Shaping Light Beams with Programmable with Photonic Circuits

by Francesco Morichetti and Andrea Melloni Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria, Politecnico di Milano
February 2022
1.Introduction- Molding the Light Light has several properties, namely amplitude, phase and polarization. If we are able to manipulate these properties as we like, we would have the power to control the light. Conceptually this is a simple story, but in real life we need suitable ...

Seeing Through Skin

by Akhil Kallepalli
December 2021
Human skin equivalents (HSE) are three-dimensional (3D) living models of human skin that replicate the biological properties and interactions within skin. They provide ideal testbeds for many applications such as wound healing assessment, drug assessment, etc. and are now seeing application with patients in surgical theatres. For these lab-cultured...

Structured Light and Structured Matter — From Tall to Small

by Prof. Dr. Peter Banzer
Institute of Physics, University of Graz
October 2021
Undoubtedly, light plays a paramount role in our day-to-day lives. It helps us with orientation, enables us to perceive our environment, and contributes significantly to a circadian rhythm. The color and intensity of light may even influence our mental state and emotions. Furthermore, it is key not only to photosynthesis in plants – one of the main...

Marine Hatchetfish Inspired RF Steganography on Based on Photonics

by Mable P. Fok* and Qidi Liu, Lightwave and Microwave Photonics Laboratory, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Georgia, Athens, GA, 30602, USA
April 2021
IntroductionCamouflage is a defense and survival strategy that organisms use to disguise their appearance and to blend in with their habitat, such that they can hide from predators and sneak up on prey. For example, a stick insect camouflages by having its appearance resemble a ...
