April 2022
Welcome to the April issue of the IEEE Photonics Society Newsletter! I hope the first few months of your year have been off to a good start!
In this issue of the Newsletter, you’ll find all the latest news, highlights, interviews, and advice you’ve come to expect. For starters, the industry engagement segment comes from a young professional’s perspective—Dr. Katie Chong of Baraja describes her insights into managing time and energy as someone in her early career. You can also learn more about the Society’s leadership team from the interview with the Associate Vice President of Women in Photonics, Prof. Deepa Venkitesh. For even more career advice, check out the WaveJobs interview with Prof. Rachel Oliver, and to hear from the students of our Society, peruse the Photonics Worldwide segment.
For a look into some of the exciting activities across the Society, you can read about the latest from the Iluminando el Futuro initiative and its accomplishments during its pilot program. Additionally, the Photonics Society Sweden Chapter provides some insights into best practices and the many activities they organize to serve and engage their community.
If you’re looking for some recommendations and general info for your awareness, I suggest you see the book review featured this month. There you’ll find an overview of the 2nd edition of Prof. Yanhua Shih’s An Introduction to Quantum Optics: Photon and Biophoton Physics. Also, be aware that there are a number of calls for award nominations and papers, so be sure to mark your calendars and plan your submissions.
Finally, please check out the Newsletter website (photonicssocietynews.org) for this entire issue and additional content you won’t find in the print edition. And as always, please reach out to us via the contact form on the website or email us at ipsnewsletter@ieee.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
